Mogwai

The Scottish five-piece experimental band Mogwai formed in 1995. Usually tagged a post-rock band because of their slow-build, instrumental workouts and the neo-classical majesty of their more ambitious songs, Mogwai has cultivated a wider range of effects, from the stripped-down delicacy of Erik Satie to the boiling rage of Big Black. Their newest album, "Atomic," was released in 2016 and features reworked material from their musical contributions to a BBC 4 documentary on the atomic age.

Tinariwen is a band of Touareg musicians, members of the nomadic culture of northern Mali's Sahara region and their instantly identifiable sound is a spellbinding, trance-like desert blues. Influenced for decades by western rock and formed in a rebel military camp, this group traded in the traditional stringed instruments for electric guitars to accompany their ornate vocal style. Their participation in the Touareg struggle for independence has informed their lyrics and their gutsy sound.

Established as a nonprofit music collective in the winter of 2008, Big Island- and Portland-based Medicine for the People is led by Nahko Bear, who, as someone of Apache, Puerto Rican and Filipino heritage, strives to bridge cultural gaps. They travel near and far, using music as their vehicle to foster self-action and healing. Nahko's second album, "My Name Is Bear," is being released in October 2017.
